Family Entertainment?
Like many of you, I attended the Michigan State Fair. One of the exhibits I attended was the neutering of a male Border Collie named Colt. The display was sponsored by the Michigan Humane Society. It consisted of a surgical tent where a veterinarian performed a live surgery and a camera that showed a close-up of the surgical procedure on a video monitor. Of course my daughter, the future veterinarian, scrambled to the top and center of the bleachers for this show. My husband and I sat on a lower bleacher behind two men who were laughing and making jokes about the poor dog loosing its masculinity. I noticed many children in the front row. After the surgery, a vet tech came out and displayed the organs the doctor removed and answered audience questions. In your opinion, is this exhibit proper entertainment at a fair? Please explain why or why not in a good paragraph. You will be commenting on each other's responses for the rest of the week.

Not at all that is kinda inappropriate for a State fair to display such a thing. They should not have displayed that, because some children coud have been there to witness that. And in my opinion that is not fair entertainment. Fair fun should be getting on rides, and hanging with friends and family. That is what I thik about the issue of fair fun and what should not be displayed at a fair.
I do believe that that type of entertainment is a little innappropriate for an audience of small children. Now a days, children take a lot of things and run with them from a negative perspective. They seem to react in an immature fashion. If there were older children there, who can really understand the concept of what was going on, that would seem a little better.
I agree and disagree with Destiny's comment because true enough like she said there were a lot of kids there at the fair...I also feel that the veternarian just wanted to show how they perform their procedures and what you do in a situation like that...
I feel that it was kinda apporitate its something different that some people would like to see, you can't really blame the fair. I say if you don't want your child to see that kind of thing don't take them there. Its not gonna be a problem if parents don't take their child in there and then complain about it.
I honestly feel that was an inappropriate act portrayed, especially in a family oriented setting. A vet should have had more common sense than to make a scene with doing sugery in a public setting. Children and families were there and whether or not it was for entertainment, that form of exploitation is very demeaning and horrid to display.
I believe it was not a good experience because children, because no child wants to see an animal being cut and also being hurt.
In my opinion I don’t think it was proper entertainment, considering the age group that attends the state fair. Some children and children are not mentally capable of handling situations, involving graphic content and such. I defiantly think they should have chosen a different type of exhibit, or even set an age restriction on the display.
I believe that it probably wasn't a good idea because many people and children finds it disturbing. You can teach things sometimes without showing or presentating this especially in front of kids. This situation could've been done in a different manner but sometimes people make the wrong choices
I feel that this is not proper entainment for a state fair.Everybody does not wish to see this medical surgery. They should take other peoples feelings into consideration.I also feel that young children should not witness this either.
I commenting on Sarahs blog how can u say that it was appropriate for them to do that. There were probably young kids at the fair at the time. And that is something that they shoud'nt see at such a young age.
I'm commenting on destiny commenting on mine. I said it was okay because no one has to bring their kids there if you don't think its apporiate for your child don't bring them there and then complain about its inapporiate two minutes later.
I am commenting on Sarahs blog. The State Fair is to blame. The State Fair is a family event, which families go, to have family fun, and family enertainment. When you attend the State Fair you do not expect to see graphic scenes.
no i dont think this was. I dont think its was a good idea because it was little kids there that shouldnt see that kinda stuff.
I personally think that this is GREAT entertainment for a state fair! But, unfortunetly there are some people that are not mature enough to handle such excitement! This show entertains many groups of people, from aspiring doctors or doctors, veterinarians, and SCIENTIST, etc.
i would like to respond to what ashly said...what she said made a lot of sense. Being that there were children in that environment they should have found somewhere else to do this. that is one of the things in life where common sense should have kicked in! i honestly believe that they shouldn't have allowed anyone to even do something like that at the fair. so i agree with ashly.
I agree with Destiny. I do believe it was inappropriate. Some parents do not approve of revealing such things to their children. The State Fair was for adults and minors therefore they should of planned something else.
I can agree with Ashly's post because it isn't right to show things like that around families and small children. It isn't right to show that especially if people are naturalist or small kids gets scared by this. I would think that maybe the vet could've approached the situation differently.
Ashley,
I agree with your comment. my daughter was very interested in watching the procedure. As an aspiring vet, she felt it would be educational to view a surgical procedure that she will do often. However, I feel that children under 12 should have been not allowed to view the show. Some children were visibly upset. Also, some people will never be mature enough to view something of this nature. The grown men making jokes seated behind me are a prime example of this behavior.
I agree with Kelby's comment, just as I have said that is inappropriate display of entertainment, it's a prime example of why there's a time and place for any view of something considered "nature explicit".
I agree with brit. That kind of entertainment is innappropriate for an audience of small chidren.
I believe that this was very inappropriate seeing that everyone was at the statefair and they were presenting something like that.
FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT!! I believe that this kind of entertainment is innapproiate in public. This should be posted on television on a private channel. Your parents should be able to decide wether you can watch it out. Theres plenty of other ways to entertain family at the state fair!!
This kind of entertainment is very inappropriate. For someone to do that it isn't right why would you do that would you like your business displayed for everyone to see. Someone should have said something the fair is supposed to be just enjoying the the rides and looking at the animals. Not watching them suffer.
I thought that it was a good performance but not in a fair. I think that they should have had a performance in a more experience place. But the mere thought of them bringing out the organs to let everyone see them was a nice idea. They should have put a price to it because that is a wonderful experience that a lot of people may have taken that for granted.
No, i dont think that it's proper entertainment for an exhibit at a fair. Veternarian work should be done in a clinic, not a fair. Plus all of the attention and loud noise could cause the dog to react different. The vet tech should know that a fair is not a place for him/her to do his/her work for entertainment. Nothing is entertaining about a animal needing help.
No, I dont think performing surgery on an animal is family entertainment. The fair should consist of games, food, and music not the display of organs. Anything could have happened to make the procedure go wrong. This may have been an entertaining thing to do for a class of future vets.
