"On Homework" by Mrs. Atkinson
As a teacher, I believe that students should spend a fair amount of time on schoolwork outside of class. This reinforces concepts taught and prepares students for the rigors of college. My recommendation for a high school student is 15 minutes of study time for each subject. Students at the Academy of Inkster need to study about one hour and forty-five minutes daily. Homework should be an extension of what is covered in class. It should include reviewing notes, completing assignments, assigned reading, or paper writing. It should not consist of killer study guides or assignments on material not previously covered. Homework should never be used as an anticipatory set.
Since the start of the school year, my daughter has been drowning in homework. She has not attended her martial arts classes and is often working on homework from the time she gets home until 11:00 pm. Much of the work is over material that has not been covered in class. The homework is the anticipatory set. She is often assigned to read an entire chapter in AP biology and complete a study guide that is about 100 questions long. The guide is required to be completed before the teacher covers the new material in class. This happens three times a week. However, I do see the teacher's rational behind the long assignments. AP classes are taught at a college level. A college professor expects students to read the chapter to be covered in the lesson before class. As a parent, I think the homework is overkill. My daughter looks terrible from lack of sleep and I am worried about her health. I would never put my own students in this position. If one of my students is "burning the midnight oil" it is because the student did not budget his or her time correctly, not because I am giving gratuitous homework.
Read the article "Homework Hell" and answer the following question:
Some educators believe that assigning a good amount of homework can improve student test scores. Other educators feel too much homework can frustrate students and discourage them from learning. In your opinion, what is the correct amount of homework to give a student? Consider the expert opinions (a teacher and a parent) in Mrs. Atkinson's Blogger entry and the article "Homework Hell" when constructing your answer.

i think that if a teacher gives a student to much homework, then it will upset the students and discourage them. i feel that students should only spend about an hour on home work, and if they dont get it then take it to the teacher the next day, so that they can help with the problems that they didnt answer. some teachers do give to much homework, like my old math teacher Mrs. Bennet, she would give about five to six pages of math homework, knowing that it would discourage us, so my mother talked to her and Mrs. Bennet slowed down on the homework. i feel that if a teacher is going to give out a lot of homework that they should make sure we understand the work all the way. so in my opinion they shouldnt give us a pile of homework.
taylor.w.1.9.9.3In my opinion, a student should only have 10 minutes of homework per class. It seems to me that when teachers give out homework, they do not take into consideration that students have homework in 6 other hours as well as their class. I also believe that teachers should not issue out homework every day. It is already hard enough to maintain good grades, have a social live, and keep their priorities in order, but with a hugh work load, that would be impossible.
In my opinion students in Mrs.Atkinson's classes should presist on about three homework assignments a week. I think we should spend the rest of the week learning about the work, so the students will get a better understanding in the subject and the work students have to do in class. I also think that we as students do need the work for more intelligent education, but some the students aren't as quick as other students in the class. It's going to take longer for students to complete the work assigned. They also going to need the teachers help causing the class to stop.
To me i agruee with both. I agruee with both because sometimes to much homework can be very stressful. The only time I like homework is when i know what I am doing. I feel that your daughter teacher is wrong for giving her all that work. Especially when they give her work that they did not cover in class. That is not fair on your daughter, for her teacher to exsepect that she can do the work, with out the teacher goin over it first. Now I look at alot of homework in a good way also because it is getting you use to the college life style. In college you are on your own and you are expected to do alot of work. So haveing an a.p class is a very good thing. But to me it is good and bad on both sides.
I think when a teacher gives a student to much work then it makes them not want to learn. Most homework doesn't get done because it's either too hard or was not covered in class. Maybe spending 45 minutes at the most is good and take work you didn't finish and tell the teacher why you didn't finish. When you have at least six classes you are not about to take your time doing homework especially when you have homework in every class and something else to do. You are just going to rush and get almost everything wronng or halfway finished. In my opinin=on teachers should lower the work load to a considerable amount and stop stressing students over homework it's going to get done.
I really dont think teachers should assign so much homework. By the time the child gets done with their work they have to eat dinner, take a bath, and get into bed. There's no time for a kid to be a kid. Children have a life outside of school and they should be able to live it. A little homework is good but assignment after assignment is to much. It's so much they we feel overwhelmed.
I feel that no more than forty-five minutes of homework and study time for a student. I feel with less homework, a student can get the rest that that need for the next school day. I feel that it is too much pressure on the student to have to deal with such a work load when they go home. I understand that when in college that a professor expects you to read a whole before the next class, but I feel when in high school, in order to prepare you for that, the teachers should have you do a little each time until you become comfortable with the idea. I feel that teachers giveing less homework and studfent spending less time on homework, and a teacher building up to the college level standards is the key for a successful high school student, as well as a successful college student.
I beleive that teachers today give way to much homework.I have a cousin in the 5th grade and he recieves twice as much homework as I did when I was in the 5th grade, I dont think 5th graders should have to spend hours on homework everyday. Some students have other classes and they may recieve homework from most of their classes I believe this could overwhelm students this could make students perform worse in class if they have to stay up all night doing homework
personally i think that the right amount of homework is at least 15 minutes for each assignment.or at least spend a whole hour on all of your homework given.the reason why i think that is because if you give to much homework the studnts might become lazy amd frustrated.i also believe that teacher shouldnt issue aout alot of work at least 3-4 times out the week;just to keep the students focused.the teacher should be considerate to the students because they know they have other classes and teachers who give out homework just as they do.the parents should keep their children intrested in school, and make them like it,make it fun for them.
I believe that teahcers shouldn't give out so much homework.Teachers should only assign homework 2-3 times a week. The homework they assign shouldn't take no more than 45 minutes to an hour to do. I feel that teachers that give out too much homework, pressure their students too much. Than the teachers wonder why their students dont want to do class work or even be in the class at all. If the student has too much homework, they cant rest and get enough sleep to focus in class the next day.
I believe that too much homework is stressful. Students who truly care about their education, want to turn in quality work and they can't do that if they have eight other assignments due. Some teachers seem to forget that students have more than one class. If all seven of a student's teachers assign work, it could measure up to be a lot of work for one night. I believe students should recieve homework, just not too much so students don't feel pressured to complete all the tasks.
In my opinion I believe that students do need a fair amount of homework. It keeps their minds from wondering off the subject. Helping them to hold and keep information. I would even say it helps them to have an expansive memory. The major downside to this load of homework is the students well being. Students are tired and unable to focus on their studies.
