AP 11 Summer Assignment

AP Literature and Composition
Summer 2009 Reading Assignment
Due September, 2nd week of school

Summer Assignment: Read any two books from the novel or short story collection below and complete the response that follows for each book read. Any public library will have these books available to lend you or you may read an electronic text. I will post a link to e-texts on Blogger. You do not need to purchase a book unless you want to.

You may choose any two of these books:

Anthem: Ayn Rand
The Bell Jar: Sylvia Plath
The Bluest Eye: Toni Morrison
Brave New World: Aldous Huxley
The Catcher in the Rye: JD Salinger
Chocolate War: A Novel Robert Cormier
Go Tell it on the Mountain: James Baldwin
The Handmaid’s Tale: Margaret Atwood
Heart of Darkness: Joseph Conrad
The Joy Luck Club: Amy Tan
Main Street: Sinclair Lewis
The Red Badge of Courage: Stephen Craine
Slaughterhouse Five: Kurt Vonnegut
Thirteen Stories (Sometimes called Selected Stories): Eudora Welty
No Disrespect: Sister Souljah

Response: In an excellent work of literature, the author speaks the truth about society. This truth can be a fault of the general society, a warning of what is to come or an explanation about why society is the way it is. Does the work you read explain a truth about the general society, offer a warning, or point out a fault? Use examples from the work to support your answer. The paper must be typed in 12 point Times New Roman font and double spaced. The length should be between one and three pages. Please save your response on a disk or flash drive for future use and give me a hard copy for feedback in the fall. Assignments can also be sent to me at lorrieatkinson@gmail.com. These will be due the first Monday we return to school. New students will be assigned this assignment upon placement in AP English.

Have a great summer!

Mrs. Atkinson
