Fountainhead Journal

These are due May 15. They will be used as a basis for you final paper.

Answer the following questions in paragraph format. If you word process these, do not share files. I will accept these questions hand written. You will have a paper and presentation based on these questions and they are to be placed in your final portfolio. A link to the Ayn Rand Institute is at the bottom of the page to be used as a reference.

Because The Fountainhead is deeply philosophical, define the following philosophical terms and give and explain an example of each from the book:

1. independence

2. dependence

3. conformity

4. individualism

5. collectivism

6. first-handers

7. second-handers

8. Ayn Rand states that the theme of The Fountainhead is: "individualism vs. collectivism, not in politics, but in men's souls." Explain fully what she means.

9. The central conflict of the novel is the contrast and conflict between first-handers and second-handers. Using both examples from the novel and from real life, examine the nature of this conflict.

10. Related to the theme is the relationship of the moral and the practical. Some of the characters in the novel believe that men of integrety have no chance to make it to the top. Other characters believe that morality and success stand hand in hand. Success is not achieved by compromising one's soul, but be remaining true to it. Analyze Ayn Rand's thinking regarding the moral and the practical using events and characters from the story.
