The World in Your Hand

Your generation is referred to as digital natives. You were raised with modern technology so it is second hand to you. My father, Mr. Bufford, turns 80 on Friday. Mr. Bufford is a retired chemical engineer. Before he retired, he was developing automotive paints for robotic painters. My father grew up in a very rural area of Tennessee without electricity, running water, or telephones. This weekend, I got a new phone. The phone has Internet and GPS. My father saw the phone and asked to see it. He played with the features for 10 minutes. I had to ask for it back. He marveled at the features and told me about his first phone. He said it was a large black phone that the phone company installed in my parent's flat when they were first married. It cost three dollars a month and my parents were able to only make two calls per day. They also shared the line with another party. My parents are both computer literate and my mother has a simple cell phone for emergencies. Why do you think my father was so fascinated by my phone? Consider his age, his former occupation, and some of the inventions and historic events that he saw in his lifetime.

I would have to say your father was of course amazed by the cell phone because he's never seen anything like this in his younger years. My Nana (grandma) was also surprised about cell phones but she has one herself; her phone has GPS, Video, Camera, Free text and everything. If I lived in times where I had no use technology, I'd be fairly amazed, too. But, my Nana wasn't as amazed since now she's text messaging, taking pictures and videos, using voice commands all by herself. She's even playing the Wii, PlayStation and Xbox360; as well as PinBall on the computer. So, I'd say your father just isn't able to adapt to the past new paste in life, but some older people are, for my Nana for example.

I believe that the reason why your father was so fascinated by it is because, like you instated earlier in the text, he was born in an era that knew nothing about technology nor how to use it... Modern technology is so new to them to the point where they think its some sort of "alien" type thing. He was fascinated by it because its one thing to see on television, but to be able to hold it in the palm of your hand is a different kind of feeling. To him it was a whole new world to explore and it was a chance for him to see how far technology has come since his era. Indeed, technology has come a long way and is drastically changing our world; the way we think, communicate, feel, look and what we say is being changed by the new technology that we surround ourselves with...

I think that he was so fasinated by her phone because it was so new and updated. It was probably all new to him since he use to be a chemical engineer. And back in his day phones didnt come with special features such as, internet or GPS or even all of these new online games. He was probably not use to that.

I say your father was so fancinated by the phone because in his time the type of technology we have was unheard of. In his old job as a chemical engineer it probably blew they mind to even tink about doing half of the things we are doing now.

I believe that your father was so fascinated by your phone because he has never been around that type of technology. He is not use to being around that type of thing. People do not understand how much more advanced we are than they were 80 years. We have came a long way. By the time we become 80 they will make technology so advanced that we ourselves will not even understandand and we have been using computers all of our lives. Its hard to believe but its reality.

your father was probably so amazed because he was born in an era that knew nothing about technology nor how to use it. And with him being a chemist it probably fascinated him greatly. Just think going from listening to everything on radio and not having colored television to ipods, cell phones, car t.v's, digital cameras and so forth. Things has change drasticly since your fathers time, it is only expected that he should be fascinated

I think that he was so fascinated by your cell phone because it proves that technology has come a long way. It probably made him stop and think about all of the things that were being invented in his time and how simple they were. Things were not that complex in his time. They were very easy to access and use. Technology to an older person is very exciting and mind boggling at the same time. My great grandmother is the same way. I have explained to her a million times what an iPod as and she still asks me to this day. It just proves that technology has come a long way and it still has a ways to go.

I believe he was fascinated by the phone because when he grew up he had no technology, and mow you can walk around with technology in your back pocket, which he probably never thought could happen, or even imagined it. This is my personnel opinion.

I believe that he was so fascinated by the cellular device because technology has changed so much over the years. He grew up n a time where technology was less advanced and things were less complicated.

Good job Shareka, Shanaye, Courtney, and Britnie. Destiny, Josh, Sharah, Ashley K., Kelby, and Jelicia need to clarify their answers.

Thanks,

I would have to say that I am not suprised of the reaction of your father.Yesterday my grand mother was learning how to use Windows Media Player and it seemed so complicated to her and then she explained they didn't have this type of technology back when she was a kid. This shows how moderen technology has grown in such a small period of time. So I would say that the cell phone was nothing like he had ever seen. He was fascinated because something so small can have features unlike such as; Internet,MP3, and Camera so can see why he didn't want to put it down.

Ryan,

My father likes technology. He was a chemist. Growing up, we have always had state of the art technology items in our household. We had a 8mm movie camera and projector when I was small. My father's hobby was making family films. These films are now preserved on CDs. My father always had the latest calculator when he was working and went back to school to learn computers. If my father was still working, I feel he would have a Blackberry with paint smudges all over it from his laboratory work.

I believe that your father is fascinated because of course having a cell phone is like the world in the palm of your hand. In his day the phones weren't cordless, they didn't have things like internet or GPS system.
