Historic Election

On Tuesday, Senator Obama became President Elect Obama. In the minds of many American citizens, he represents change. He won the votes of all ethnic and age groups across the country. To me, Obama represents a 21st century united America of cooperation across all groups in this vast country. In today's global society, cooperation across the board is needed for success. It is impossible to have a global society with groups of people who do not cooperate or understand one another. When I came to school Wednesday, some students thought they had a right to act crazy because we finally have a president they can identify with. Do you believe Mr. Obama would have condoned the behavior of these students? Explain why in a good paragraph.

No they didn't have the right to act like that. Why they were acting this way I don't know but I feel that they was acting like that because thwy have a black president so they can do what they want. Which isn't correct

I say Barack Obama would be happy that people were happy he was elected President. They were just celebrating, and they will cool down. There is a limit to celebrating though they didn't need to yell and scream at school, but Obama would probably be happy people are excited about his election.

I dont think that he would condone this type behavior. Because even though he is our skin color, that doesnt give blacks a reason to act dumb a go around drinking and parting all wild. You can celebrate but celebrate responsibilily.

I believe the behavior yesterday, showed ignorance in our community in many ways. This also goes to show that we are still looking at skin color. We as a country need to look at what he’s bringing to our country, and how he is going to advance our country, that’s what "we as a country" need to be excited about. We should not take this and turn it into a "color thing" so to say because he's our first black president, although it is a very historical and exciting event, we should act accordingly.

I am commenting on Sarah's blog post I agree with her 100% but at the same there's a time celebrate and a time to calm down. And let Obama get down to business.

I for one do believe that Obama would have not condoned such behavior. Instead of us cheering because a black man is in office, cheer because he made a difference in a world. He's made a differnce to not only the U.S. but all over the world and across the nations. He's done what no black man and democrat has done before, he's making a difference and bringing about change. I can now proudly say, "I am an American".

I don't believe that he would have encouraged that type of behavior because he won the election. I, on the other hand, see nothing wrong with a little celebration. People are always so quick to say what is innapropriate or what is out of countrol for certain settings. Who celebrates a victory by being quiet? I don't know anyone who does that. We are just happy because we as a people have come a long way. Its like he said in his speech, "It's been a long time coming." We just want to celebrate whats ours. Even though people are upset because others voted for him just because he's black, and even though its not about race, that's what its going to always be about. He DOES represent US.

I believe that Mr. Obama would not have condoned their behaviors at all. Their behavior was an act of ignorance and that isn't what he represents. If he was to witness them acting in such a manner i think he might have stopped them and expressed how he felt about our young people and how they seem to act all the same.

I think Barack Obama would be proud about people being glad that he was presidentt. They were only celebrating baracks election, so i believe they werent wrong for doing what they did. There are times for celebrating and there are times to just be happy of what happened, but for something so big in the world, i think its ok to act as such.

I believe that president obama would have appreciated the love that was shown. But far as the behavior i don't believe he would have condoned it.The behavior was very crazy an unnessasary. I think that he would expect a better way to celerbrate him an his winning the election.

I wouldn't say that he would so much except them acting wild, but he would understand why they wanted to celebrate his coming into office.Obama is our first African American president. The students need to understand that there is a time and a place for everything.Do not get me wrong, they needed to calm down but i do believe that it was understandable what they did and Obama wouldn't have been upset.

I agree with Kelby we should calm things down, and get serious. Obama is showing the world that african americans can be responible and make it in this world as something more then dequinerents in this world.

I would Barack Obama should've been the president and everyone wanted him to be president. They wanted a change in the U.S. and I believe if they wasn't ready for change, they wouldn't have voted for him. Obama is a very great guy and I believe he would set a great role model for everyone, not just african americans but every nationality. Obama just proves anyone of any race besides the whites can become president if they work hard and set their mind to it. I would believe everyone is ready for 4 years of change and maybe even 4 more years of change hopefully. Obama can't change people's behavior but he can influence others by his own.

This was dum first off because no matter what he or anybody thinks we have our own personalities. Yes alot of us was over excited. He probly was too. Everybody express themselves differently.

I agree with Britnie completely. Obama would not have encouraged it but it is understandable why they did what they did. Everyone was celebrating. Our people made it a long way and i don't know about you but i am happy and extremely proud of our people.

Unknown said...

No he wouldn't care because he is excited himself and it is a day to rejoice for all middle and lower class citizens of the United States. There is no problem with celebrating his presidency.

I agree with both Destiny and Kelby. They share the same opinion as i do about the situation at hand. Although sometimes ignorance can be bliss in this case it was just an act of passion that the young peopl have. The problem is not that they are passionate about having a president of color, but the fact that they don't know how to show their passion in a possitive way that doesn't embarrass both themselves and those around them.

I agree with Sarah's response to the blog. I think that he would have been happy that they were celebrating his victory and they would have eventually settled down. Its not against the law for people to celebrate. We didn't tell other people to settle down when Geroge Bush got into office twice.

Shanaye' said...

I completely completely agree with Britnie's blog... We as a people have a right to celebrate however we feel, but there's a way to do it. People are so quick to judge and point the finger at people because they way they celebrate and express their feelings. I admit that some people go too far, but I believe that the went too far when they elected Bush in office twice! People are just full of it and they need to mind their own business sometimes. I think that he would not only be proud for us cheering, but happy as well, so why can't we celebrate, it's time for a change and that's what we want and eventually we would calm down so until then, Butt-Out!!!!

Courtney,

President elect Obama is just like you. He is from a mixed race heritage. I feel he can do much for race relations in this country because he represents both sides of the coin.

All students,

The reason I posted this topic was because few things that were said to me and several other teachers of my heritage after election day that were very offensive (not by my students, but other AOI students that do not know me well). I voted for Obama myself because I felt that he was the best qualified person for the job. Over the past eight years, I watched my savings and ability to earn a good living tumble. Why would I vote for more of the same? I choose a president based on merits and ideals, not skin color. However, I feel skin color is still a factor with many Americans. Martin Luther King wanted an America where people are judged on their merits and character, not the color of their skin. Let's make his dream a reality. We are all Americans! Sometimes I feel that this will never be a reality. I hope that Obama's presence in the presidency will bring a universal understanding to all Americans that we must work together for the good of our nation. We must work on our cooperative spirit and quit dividing our nation racially.

I believe that Barack Obama would be happy that students were excited he won. I say this because last election alot of my peers didn't even know who was running or what they stood for. This election many young adults took a stand and showed thier interest in changing thier country. I feel this is a huge change and again he would enjoy the ethusiastic approach by his fellow Americans.

Considering that Barack Obama represents change, I feel that he would be very happy that the students feel that he can make a change in the U.S., but on the other hand that still does not give students the right to act as if they do not have to follow the rules. I also feel that people are so caught up in the hype that we will have an African American president they forget to remember that not only is is black he is highly qualified and capable to do the job.

A.Kennedy said...

I disagree with KELBY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Students showing excitment because we have an African American president elect does not show ignorance.

Unknown said...

i agree wit ashley. There is nothing wrong with showing ecitment because we have an african american president. We as African Americans finally have someone in higer power that we can relate to.This is an amazing situation and to celebrate it is the least we can do.

Mr. Kelbs Calhoun said...

I agree with Shanaye' completely. We are cheering for the wrong reason. We need to look at this situation politically, and not socially, in my opinion.

Ryan Davis said...

I agree with Ashley 100%. Students should have the right to expess thier emotions as long as they do not break rules.

Poeple feel that they have an advantage because they have a black president. Just because he's a black president doesn't mean that you automatically have an easy way out. Whatever it is that you want (jobs and etc) you have to get it yourself. Obama's just making an easier way for you to get it and building a stepping stone. The behavior that was portrayed was in celebration because of the triumph that was just established. It could've been celebrated in a better sense, but people were happy so I do not feel that Obama would have really said anything about people being happy.

Unknown said...

I disagree with Kelby our entire community did not show ignorance it was simply showing how excited we as the African American community were to see a black president.

Mr. Kelbs Calhoun said...

Well Ashley I never said the reason they were celebrating was ignorant. I was saying that the way they went about celebrating showed ignorance, which are completely two different things. I also believe reading thoroughly stops confusion, and embracement!!!!!
