Final Paper/Portfolio Requirements

Please work on these items over the break. The end of the semester will "creep up" quickly once we return to school. You have almost three weeks to get these items straight. I will have all items returned to you Friday before we leave for break.

Draft of Final Paper: Due Tuesday, January 8, 2008 (100 points)

Portfolios Due: With final exam (100 points)

Paper Requirements:
Choose one prompt- 2-3 MLA typed pages

1. Discuss why BMU is a "coming of age novel" and compare it to another "coming of age novel of literary merit (example: Huckleberry Finn or Black Boy). Make sure you touch upon loss of innocence, trials, descents into darkness, and achievement of knowledge for both novels.

2. Discuss any two symbols in BMU. How does the author use these symbols to express the themes (universal truths) in the novel. You may choose any of the following pairs of symbols to discuss:

1. The moon and the sea
2. The owl and the blood
3. Nature and the golden carp

Your portfolio needs to include:
1. 10 bell work writings
2. Four sets of BMU questions
3. Charting dreams
4. Poetry Analysis
"The Lamb"
"The Tygre"
5. 2-3 page critical paper
