Week of 9/24/07

Greetings Students! Here is your post for this week. Please respond in paragraph format. College selection consists of these criteria. Grades count 40%, ACT scores count 40%, and extra curricular activities count 10%. Do you agree with this method of student selection? Give three reasons why you agree or disagree?

I agree because in my own opinion you must take the test seriously because how you are graded on this test will determine if you get unto college or not. We have to take this test more seriously because it can either make or brake us in the near future.

in my opinion this method has to put people to the test and make them work hard to get the education needed to succeed in life, but on the other hand i want to work hard and play hard so any thing extra i do has to count for a much higher percentage than that because i'm still putting forth the same effort as i do work to all the other things i do as well.

I disagree with that method of student selection because it is unfair. Just because a student may not do well on the ACT or does not have a 4.0 average doesn't mean that they are not qualified for college. Another reason I disagree is because there are a lot of students that don't do well on standardized test even if they study as hard as they can. I am one of them and I know personally that they are not easy. I think they should narrow it down a little more.

I disagree with this method, in my opinion I dont thing nobody should be jugded by their performance on a test. For example, you could be a honor roll student and then when you get ready to take the test you fail it or score low. I think it is not because you are not capable of going to college, it is because some people just have poor test taking skills. I also think they are going to make students take a state test they should atleast lower the score you have to score in order to past.

I agree with that because most of the schools out here now don't really care. And if the teachers don't care, then how are they going to get you to care. But you really do need to take these percentages into consideration if you're trying to go to college.

I agree because that is a perfectly logical way to base who colleges are going to accept as students. The system they have forces students to take their studies seriously and to get ready for the stress and hard work that comes with college.

With the strict curriculum that students are being taught, no I do not agree with the college selection method. I think it's very unfair to students. One reason its not fair, some students are excellent in the classroom, but when it comes to the standardized test taking, they may not do as well as they are able to in the classroom. Another reason its not fair to students, is because some students may have a lot to do with, school, work, and home, that they mat not have time for extra curricular activities.

In my perspective, students should not be judged by the test that is given. The test should only be provided to show what the students have been learning, but using it for college representation of whether a student should be required to have a certain score on a test is irrelevant. Extra cirricular activities shouldn't play a role either because there are some cases where, the students cannot participate in extra cirricular activities due to some circumstances. So in my case I do not agree with these selections.

In my opinion i think the method is reasonable because we need things to help us prepare for the future. We need to look at life more now. Life out there is hard so thats why are being tested to see if we can make if so that we can have much practice. Many should be able to achieve a 40% or higher.

Yes I agree. Becasue all teachers have a cirriculam that they must follow to teach students what they need to know before going to college . Standardized test ,overall class room performance ,and extra cirricular activites show the over all performance of each student. Students need to take their education more seriously beacuse they know with out and education you can not get far in life without an education
